What the Visit and Report Cover

Gas logs burn in the existing firebox and vent up the existing chimney, so we inspect both before recommending a set. The firebox is measured front, back, depth and height, and the room size is noted. Vented sets are what we fit in almost every case, with the damper clamped open. The install report shows the burner, log layout, clamp, valve and a CO reading.

What We Check Before Recommending a Set

Gas logs turn a wood-burning fireplace into one you light with a switch. They burn in the existing firebox and vent up the existing chimney, so the fireplace and chimney have to be in shape for it. Before quoting, we inspect the firebox for cracks, the damper for operation, and the flue for blockage and creosote left from years of wood fires. A dirty flue gets swept first. A cracked firebox gets repaired first. Those findings go into the same kind of report as any other inspection, with photos and ratings.

We then measure the firebox width at the front and back, its depth and its height, because a log set has to fit with room to spare. We also note the room size and ceiling height. Vented sets, which are what we recommend in almost every case, produce a realistic flame and send their exhaust up the chimney, with the damper clamped open so it cannot be closed while the logs are in. Ventless sets release their exhaust and moisture into the room itself, so we rarely suggest them.

The Install Report

Gas log jobs are quoted in writing for the set you choose and the gas line work needed. Some fireplaces in older Valley homes already have a gas stub from the days of log lighters, which shortens the job. Others need a new line run from the nearest supply. On install day we fit the burner and logs as the manufacturer shows, fit the damper clamp, install a shut-off valve where it can be reached, and test every fitting for leaks.

The install report shows the burner, the log placement, the damper clamp, the valve, and the gas connection, along with the model and the lighting instructions. It also records a carbon monoxide reading in the room with the set running at full flame. Keep the report with the manual. Log placement matters for clean burning, and when logs get moved during cleaning, the photo shows exactly where each one goes back.

Gas Logs on Our City Routes

Each city page adds the local house types and weather that show up in our reports there.

Gas Logs in Burbank

Many Burbank houses still have the fireplace they were built with, and a report on one of them is often the first anyone has written. We start with the basics, liner type, damper condition and cap, and write each finding so a first-time owner can follow it without a glossary.

Gas Logs in Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks reports split cleanly in two. Houses on the flats tend to show masonry wear and older dampers, while the hillside homes often have factory-built fireplaces behind stone faces, and the report has to name the make and model before any repair can be priced.

Gas Logs in Studio City

A lot of our Studio City work arrives with a home sale attached, so the Level 2 report has to be clear enough for a buyer, a seller and two agents to read on a phone. Older homes on the flats often carry chimneys patched after 1994, and the camera shows whether those patches still hold.

Gas Logs in Encino

Encino homes often have more than one fireplace on separate flues, so a single report covers several systems. We number each fireplace and flue at the top of the report and keep its photos and ratings together, which makes it easy to approve work on one without mixing it up with another.

Gas Logs in Woodland Hills

Our Woodland Hills reports keep returning to the same three findings: clay tile liners with joints opened by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, crowns cracked on the hillside homes that face the sun, and rusted cap mesh. Each one gets a photo, a location and a plain rating, so you can see where your house sits against that pattern.

Gas Logs in Canoga Park

Canoga Park houses are mostly single-story, which lets us reach the chimney from the roof on nearly every visit and photograph the crown and cap directly. Reports here often find original dampers rusted in place and clay tile liners that have never been camera-checked.
